The fireplace was the center of the home up until the invention of gas stoves, central heating, and such. It was the homes main heat source and often used to cook over. Chairs and/or benches were placed around it, soup and coffee were warmed over it, family pictures and often a clock sat on its mantel, and the family dog lay curled up beneath it. Families grew close around it, your folks dated by it and friends laughed and talked in front of it. Such Conversations as, "Tell me about your day", "How is your mother doing?", "When is the wedding", "How are your crops fairing/" or "Did ya hear what happened in town today?" were frequent around the fire. Here it is the same. So, how was your day? |
