Raspbian: So Long Stretch, Hello Buster!
Jul 10th, 2019, 12:41am

Goodbye Stretch, one of the shortest lived Raspbian Linux versions. Originally created for the Raspberry Pi Model 3B+ and downward compatible to the other models. It did have a few issues but were corrected on their updates/upgrades. But now, less than 18 months later, the Raspberry Pi Foundation releases a new system (The Raspberry Pi Model 4), they also release a new Raspbian OS.

Raspbian Jessie has a great run shortly after the release of the Model B+ and before the Model 2B, lasting almost 3 years. Since Raspbian Stretch, the new operating system comes in 1 of 3 options: Raspbian Lite – a Text/Console based version of the OS, Raspbian with a GUI Desktop – a “windows graphical system” for the OS and Raspbian with GUI Desktop and Recommended Software – “windows graphical system” for the OS with added software like Libre Office. Under Jessie and before, Raspbian gave you the Raspbian Lite text/console version and Raspbian GUI Desktop with recommended software.

Thus far one of the many complaints I have heard of Buster is issues with UART Serial communications not being supported unless one installs it. This can be a problem with many older projects using UART Communications will not work unless one does some system patching of such missing pieces. But who knows, maybe UART Communications will be put in on the next update/upgrade of Raspbian Buster.

So long Stretch, Long Live Buster!
