R-Pi 0 & R-Pi 0W Compatibility Issues?
Nov 8th, 2017, 9:12pm

Tested the R-Pi 0 and R-Pi 0W with older Jessie, Older Wheezy and Pi Mame, because it looked like my Pi Mame died. It's OK, its the SD Micro to SD converter that is unstable.

But the version of PiMame that I had "die" on me is on the older Wheezy OS. And this version of Wheezy will not update and will not boot on the R-Pi 2 or R-Pi 3. And as I suspected, it would not boot on the R-Pi 0/0W either despite how close it is to the Model A+/B+ series which I remember it does boot from.

The question is: will the other older Jessie and Wheezy will boot off on a R-Pi 0 and R-Pi 0W? The versions I'm using are the one I created on a Model B, then updated and upgraded on the Model B+ and then did the same thing to them on the R-Pi 2 & R-Pi 3 last year to see if I can get some improvement since as is raw they seem to run slow on the other systems, and as first thought - the updates and upgrades did improve things on the OSes involved.

Do note I did not test the the Wifi or Bluetooth on the R-Pi 0W... but it seemed that the OSes did boot on both R-Pi 0s. MineCraft and other programs on them ran very quickly and smoothly. Jessie had the older LXDE Gui and not the Pixel GUI, and there was no problem with it. It ran smoothly and nicely. Funny, on the older Jessie SD, I had a Servo Test program to move a Servo left and right, which worked well on the Model B and Model B+. Without a header on the R-Pi 0s, I could not test it, though I would have liked too if it had one.

Wheezy also booted up on the R-Pi0s as well, though there was no issues, I have read somewhere that if the cpu-clock is over or under clocked for an older system, it would cause problems for the R-Pi 0. I did not notice such issues though in the future I will comment out the cpu-clock statements in the config.txt file. There was a red-letter warning on the boot screen when I ran it, but it went by so fast, I did not see what it said. I will have to check the logs the next time I do this test. But everything else seemed to run fine. Programs, including Open Libre and Minecraft booted up and ran fine, and there was no issues with the GUI.

They seemed to boot up an older RetroPi I had, but it still gave me problems as it wanted a Joystick or GamePad to connect too and that is as far as it goes - stuck on that configuration screen. This RetroPi did this to all my R-Pies I tested on, so RetroPi is the problem and not the R-Pies.

In the next couple of weeks I will be updating some of my Raspbians for the R-Pies but still keeping the older OSes around just in case.  I do need to organize a few things to get them in order.

I also downloaded a newer version of PiMame and will need to burn it on a SD Card and try it on a R-Pi 2 and R-Pi 3. If it will work on them, it will work on the R-Pi zero.

Argh! Redid some tests and found the following:

PiMame (the version from the Dead SD Card) will only work on the Model B and Model A; not the Model B+ or Model A+.

Chameleon (on another SD Cards I have)  will only work on the Model B and Model A; not the Model B+ or Model A+.

RetroPi (The old version that I have on other SD Cards) will work Model B, B+, A, A+ and R-Pi Zero. I need to retest this but it was not worked on the R-Pi 2 and thus in theory will not work on the R-Pi 3. The problem could be one of two things here; dirty contacts on the R-Pi 2 and R-Pi 3. I found this on one of the Chameleon SD cards as it was flaky but after cleaning out its contacts, it worked fine on the 3 Model Bs I tested it on.

RetroPi has a version that will work on the R-Pi 2 and R-Pi 3, and they have split into 2 groups, Retro Pi and HyperPi. And from both a third one came out called RetroOrangePi.

Jessie and Wheezy does work on all systems, they just need updating and upgrading from the oldest and step updates and grades to the next machines going up.

Well the cowboy, like the red man, you had to leave your land
You can't raise your stock and plant your crop in the gumbo and the sand
Greed disguised as progress has put us to the test
They won't be glad until we're gone from our home out in the west
It's sad to see those good old days replaced with greed and doubt
Soon we'll leave the country, the campfire has gone out
Bid 'em all adieu, you can't turn the world about
The cowboy left the country, the campfire has gone out
