Got the Orang Pi Zero... But...
Feb 11th, 2017, 2:17pm

While the forum was down I got the Orange Pi Zeros from the mail. It took about 32 days for it get to my door from China. As I suspected, it came by Slow Boat instead of Airline.

I am amazed at it, though I do have an issue with them. The O-Pi 0 with 512MB of RAM has a paper label identifying it, which when I got it out of the anti-static bag, it fell off the board. I used a bit of contact cement to put it back in place. The O-Pi 0 with 256MB of RAM has no label.

I am amazed because of its tiny size - about 2 1/2 inches square! They could have done more with it but I think they were trying to keep the cost down to sell a cheap board. As is, it has Ethernet and Wifi/BlueTooth. Though it has 1 USB Port, with the expansion board it has 3 USB Ports and Audio/Composite Video.

Unfortunately, I lost my bag with my SD Cards. I have (or had) a WWII Ammo Canvas Bag where I stored new, still in the package SD Cards and a few other new things I did not open yet for setting up Pies with. That bag is gone, missing, not been found yet. So currently I do not have an SD Card for it yet. I tried booting from the O-Pi PC SD Card, which boots up my O-Pi Lite and O-Pi Mini boards, but the O-Pi Zero will no boot off it. "Newest things in Incompatibility" as we used to say in the 1980s for when a new computer came out that was incompatible with everything else in the market while claiming it to be better than everything before it.

The missing bag with the SD cards sets me back by a lot. There was a mixture of Class 4 and Class 10 in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB sizes; the O-Pies only boot from the expensive Class 10 SD cards. Unless I get lucky and find the bag, looks like I'm going to save my pennies and start buying SD cards when I see them on sale in various places.

I must say that I am impressed with its small size while sporting a Quad Core CPU and 512MB ram size. Can't wait to get it up and running.

Well the cowboy, like the red man, you had to leave your land
You can't raise your stock and plant your crop in the gumbo and the sand
Greed disguised as progress has put us to the test
They won't be glad until we're gone from our home out in the west
It's sad to see those good old days replaced with greed and doubt
Soon we'll leave the country, the campfire has gone out
Bid 'em all adieu, you can't turn the world about
The cowboy left the country, the campfire has gone out
