The Pi Store Is Dead! Long Live the Pi Store!
Apr 10th, 2016, 8:53pm

One of the many things that the Pi Store did was expose R-Pi Users to the available software that is out there for the Raspberry Pi. Just double click the Pi Store Icon and *POOF!* - Linux Apps for the R-Pi Galore! And most of it free! There were some that were for sale or needed a license for but that was perhaps less than 1 or 2 percent of the whole lot!

But it is that 1 or 2 percent that messed it up for everyone else. Because of this, the Pi Store dealt with the purchases of such licenses and so on through their bank in Europe. But this caused issues with the EU and the Euro and other national banking systems, forcing to charge the Raspberry Foundation and the Pi Store outrageous fees. These fees are the reasons why The Pi Store closed down their software division. They will sell R-Pi's and MagPi magazines to whole sellers and schools in mass quantities but that's it.

So you got a brand new R-Pi and just burned a copy of Jessie on it from the Raspberry Foundation Download site. There are a few neat things in it, but there is still that Pi Store icon that is now not working. You want free software.... everyone does! But what to do?

I mentioned that the latest updated to Jessie (and Wheezy) fixed a lot of things. It fixes this too. The Raspberry Pi Foundation moved all the free software to the Git-Hub repository, and made a Linux App known as the Package Manager to connect to the repository for you to download all the software you would need and want. It is the second item of the linked Raspberry Pi Blog linked here and elsewhere in The Cabin:  https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/latest-raspbian-update/
(See "New graphical package manager" on the blog)

Unfortunately, Wheezy does not have this option but according to the blog it can be added on with:
Quote:
sudo apt-get install pi-package

Then you double click the package manager and it will open up with all the available software on the repository. You can also remove existing software as well. This option is available to many Linux systems, including Debian - the makers of Raspbian for the R-Pi. It is great that they had ported this over the lastest release of Jessie through an update and as an install app for Wheezy and older un-updated Jessie.

one place falls another will rise to take it's place, if it's wanted enough. kinda like Pirate's Bay.

Well the cowboy, like the red man, you had to leave your land
You can't raise your stock and plant your crop in the gumbo and the sand
Greed disguised as progress has put us to the test
They won't be glad until we're gone from our home out in the west
It's sad to see those good old days replaced with greed and doubt
Soon we'll leave the country, the campfire has gone out
Bid 'em all adieu, you can't turn the world about
The cowboy left the country, the campfire has gone out
