Several book publishers print bibles to be stolen because the church pays them to do so. This way the public gets access to the bible for free and if they want a copy, they can take it. Hotel Management has a case load in their basement for replacements and the church comes in once a year to restock their supplies.
That is very generous. Of course, there is also the urban legend that some generous Christians will leave money (paper notes/bills) in a Gideon's bible to reward people who turn to the Bible in times of need.
