Title: FREE SOFTWARE!!
Post by Fernando on Feb 6th, 2008, 1:03am

The OpenCD Project was created to provide Free Open Source Programs and Applications orginally created for Linux, converted to run on Windows. It is died, though you could download their OLD CDs from their Web Site: http://releases.theopencd.org/

The OpenDisc Project (http://theopendisc.com) was created to pickup where Open CD left off. They list many great programs, incuding 1 or 2 that you may already use: Firefox. A list of programs and their explainations can be found here: http://theopendisc.com/programs

Of the programs listed, a BASIC Windows User would enjoy the following:

The Gimp - A Photoshop Free Software Clone.

Scribus - A Pagemaker/Quark Work Alike for DeskTop Publishing.

FireFox - The Netscape Web Browser

Audacity - An MP3 Sound Editor

Celestia - A simulation of the entire universe...

Stellarium - A planetarium for your computer.

VLC - A Multimedia Player for many formats.

Open Office - A Microsoft Office Clone. 100% Comptiable to MS Office

PDFCreator - creates Adobe Acrobat .pdf files.

7-Zip - A Compression/Decompression tool

Clamwin - An Antivirus Program for Windows.

-ALL FREE! Just download the CD image and Burn it to a CD.

It was orginally written for Linux.
But to keep the free software movement going, they converted some of these programs for Windows Users. Windows it self, like Linux is just the operating system. A computer with just the operating system is just pretty much useless.

Thats why the software is free.
In the Linux world- these are the big titles to have.

I've used this one for years, but Adobe Photoshop does seem a lot more polished, comprehensive and intuitive.

FireFox - The Netscape Web Browser

It's not really Netscape... the history is long and convoluted.  Suffice it to say that Netscape's rendering engine from version 4 became the basis for "Mozilla", which was eventually completely re-written into what is called "Gecko", which was used in the Mozilla Suite, which was used as the basis for Firebird (and Thunderbird, Sunbird, Netscape 6, and Netscape 7), which was renamed Firefox (for copyright reasons), which was used as the basis for Netscape 8 and Netscape 9.  They're like 'cousins' of the same bloodline, but I wouldn't say that Firefox is the Netscape web browser.

It's a good suite of office tools, but again it's not as polished as Microsoft Office.  Also, I've seen a few cases where Microsoft Word and Excel files get scrambled upon importation, so I'd not call it exactly 100% compatible.

A very nice one too, with support for RAR files and ZIP files, as well as the well-performing 7zip format.

Given the option of spending hundreds of dollars for the software above or spending some time to download a cd image file and burning it to a disk and have a 'license' to run the software, I'll take my chances with Free.

People do not understand that there is quality software out there that they can get and use for free which is as good or better than the pay stuff. They think that they can pump money into their machines and expect them to run better. People live in such a falicy...
